Using the Olympics to Celebrate Senior Wellness

In May 2024, Quality Insights successfully hosted the Senior Summer Olympics at the Family Services-Upper Ohio Valley Senior Center in Wheeling, WV. The goal of this five-week series was to introduce healthy discussions and lifestyle habits in a fun and friendly environment while increasing socialization and participation from those in attendance at the nursing home. By integrating engaging activities with valuable educational content, the event set a new standard for organizing wellness events for seniors.

Promoting Heart Health, Fitness, and Preventive Care

Staying heart healthy is critical to senior wellness, and what better way to do it than through fun and engaging activities? Regular exercise, especially when it's enjoyable, can reduce the risk of heart disease, which is a big concern for older adults. By making fitness a part of daily life, seniors can boost their energy, improve their cardiovascular health, and feel better overall. Focusing on preventive health, like getting routine immunizations, helps protect against illnesses like the flu, pneumonia, and COVID-19.

Wellness events highlighting these aspects are not just about staying healthy—they're also a fun way to learn and connect with others, making it easier for seniors to lead happy, informed, and active lives. Reflecting on the impact of the partnership with Quality Insights, Paula Calvert, MBA, CEO of Family Services-Upper Ohio Valley, shared:

"The partnership with Antanette from Quality Insights has been life-changing for our clients. The reduction of social isolation, the new friendships that have formed, and the reduction of medications have been amazing to witness. I recommend community partnerships due to the impacts for all involved."

This wellness event was structured around 45-minute sessions of Senior Olympic training. Participants engaged in two activities per week designed to boost heart rate, coordination, and balance. Resources and educational discussions on maintaining healthy lifestyle choices while preparing for the Senior Summer Olympics complemented these exercise sessions.

Weekly Highlights: A Month of Wellness and Fun

Week One: Kickoff with Heart-Healthy Activities

The series started with activities like the javelin throw and ring toss, designed to boost heart rate, coordination, and balance. Alongside the physical exercises, educational resources were provided, including the "Eating Healthy for Life Grocery List" and the "DASH Diet: Dietary Approaches to Stop Hypertension" flyer. The grocery list highlighted foods recommended for reducing the risk of high blood pressure, giving participants practical tips during the discussion.

Educational resources on heart health for seniors, like those provided during the event, are critical for empowering older adults to manage their cardiovascular health effectively. The pre-test score for Week One averaged 50%, which increased to 83% after the session. Participants reported 100% enjoyment and were eager to recommend the class.

Week Two: Advancing Fitness and Knowledge

In Week Two, participants enjoyed football target practice and volleyball spike with balloons. During the following discussion, educational flyers, including "Chair Yoga: Boost Your Heart, Sit and Start" and "Seated Exercises," were distributed to support heart-healthy habits.

Participants had previously learned this material at a past event led by Quality Insights. Both pre-test and post-test scores for Week Two were 100%, indicating that participants effectively retained and applied the information. While a perfect score typically does not indicate new knowledge, in this context, it demonstrates their strong grasp of the material previously taught.

Week Three: Focusing on Preventive Health

Week Three featured putt-putt gold and target practice, with discussions focused on Annual Wellness Visits and preventive services, providing educational materials such as "Medicare's Annual Wellness Visit" and "Understanding Your Blood Pressure Readings." The average pre-test score was 60%, which improved to 100% post-test, showing a significant gain in knowledge. Participants not only enjoyed the activities but also found the information valuable for managing their health. Emphasizing preventive care in seniors is crucial, as early detection and regular check-ups are vital to maintaining long-term well-being.

Week Four: Emphasizing Immunization

For Week Four, participants engaged in mini basketball-pong and frisbee balancing relay races, accompanied by discussions on maintaining a healthy lifestyle and the importance of immunization. Vaccinations recommended for seniors, such as those against pneumonia and influenza, are critical for preventing serious health complications and maintaining community health. Educational flyers covered in this session, like "The Value of Vaccines for Community Health," "Preventing Pneumonia through Vaccination," and "Seven Things You Need to Know about Long COVID," are all available for download in the QIN-QIO Resource Library.

A pre-test revealed that only 25% of participants correctly identified the recommended vaccines for those 65 and older. Still, after the session, 100% of participants answered correctly, showing a significant improvement in knowledge.

Week 5: Senior Summer Olympics Closing Ceremony

After four weeks of training, participants took part in an hour-long event featuring all eight activities from the series. This culminated in a review of the education provided and setting summer goals for diet, exercise, and care coordination. Pre-test scores on the material covered over the four-week period were a perfect 100%, showing strong retention of knowledge, and post-test results confirmed this high level of understanding. Participants expressed great satisfaction and a strong willingness to recommend the event to others.

Impact and Feedback

Quality Insights has received heartwarming testimonies from the Family Services-Upper Ohio Valley Senior Center participants. One participant shared that she has significantly reduced her need for pain medication since engaging in Quality Insights' weekly offerings at the senior center. Previously taking four pain pills daily, she now manages with only two. Another participant reported substantial improvements in managing her blood pressure thanks to lifestyle changes encouraged through Quality Insights classes. Aligning her diet with the DASH Diet—frequently discussed in the program—has been crucial in this positive shift. These testimonies highlight the tangible benefits of the program in improving participants' health and quality of life.

The Senior Summer Olympics not only achieved its goal of enhancing heart health and coordination among seniors but also demonstrated the effectiveness of organizing wellness events for seniors. The program was a resounding success, with a consistent 100% satisfaction rate and significant improvements in knowledge retention. Participants valued both the physical activities and the educational content, reflecting the program's impact on their health and well-being.

"The Senior Summer Olympics was a tremendous success, demonstrating the impact that well-organized wellness events can have on our senior communities. It's not just about the fun activities; it's about empowering seniors with the knowledge and tools they need to lead healthier lives. Quality Insights is proud to have been part of such a meaningful event." - Antanette Murphy, Quality Improvement Specialist at Quality Insights
